Monday’s 64,000 Dollar Question: Vikings at 49ers

Cryptic words from 49ers’ kicker Phil Dawson, “The forecast calls for southwest winds, which I’ve never seen. I’ve got to treat it like a road game, get in there and feel it out.” This game has so many unknowns already, now we’re dealing with southwest winds! Since kickers are prolific for being unreliable sources, I went and did a quick weather.com search to see if this was a true oddity in Santa Clara, CA. Turns out in their 14 day forecast, only on Monday will we see any winds going in that direction southwest at 12mph. How does this affect your team on DraftKings or FantasyDraft? Okay, no idea, but it’s clear things are a mystery in San Francisco.

The front seven from last year use to have Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, and Justin Smith have now been replaced by Aaron Lynch, NaVarro Bowman, and Quinton Dial. In the preseason, all but one looked in season form when it came to tackling the ball carrier. And that’s a bad sign because the ball carrier that will likely get the most touches tomorrow is none other than Adrian Peterson 7,700 (DK) 14,800 (FDr).

Another mystery is, All Day, himself. He’s coming off a near season long suspension and unfairly decided to skip the preseason. Now us fantasy owners have not the slightest clue what shape he’s in. He does still view himself as the “LeBron James” of the NFL, according to a sideline interview. Also not playing in the preseason assumes that there’s no rust.

As for the two players handing off the ball, they’re behind two makeshift offensive lines. The 49ers line makeover was due to the exodus they had in the offseason, not as if their line was stellar last year. The Vikings lost Loadholt and Sullivan due to injuries during the preseason, got to wonder if either QB will be able to stay upright. Many experts have Teddy Bridgewater 6,600 (DK) 13,200 (FDr) in consideration as their starting QB this week, mainly because they don’t recognize the CBs in the matchup; the opinion here is that they looked really good in the preseason when you factor in they didn’t have a quality pass rush. Vegas has under/over at 41.5, which is small potatoes. Don’t expect much scoring.

It goes without saying—but I’ll say it anyway—not fan of the WRs this week. Though, Charles Johnson 4,900 (DK) 10,100 (FDr) is a reasonable price tag for his talent, but there are better, cheaper, options this week. The same goes for 49ers RB Carlos Hyde 5,300 (DK) 10,000 (FDr).—As for Kyle Rudolph 3,500 (DK) 7,300 (FDr), he just can’t seem to stay on the field, though the 49ers did struggle against TEs in the preseason.

The belief is the game will go as follows: Both defenses will sellout on the run and put pressure on QB. Eight players in the box will turnout being ineffective on both sides. The reason to not start Hyde is because he’s in a timeshare with Reggie Bush 3,900 (DK) 7,500 (FDr). The defenses in this game are both playable. 49ers 2,800 (DK) 5,600 (FDr) and Vikings 2,800 (DK) 5,400 (FDr). Both also have great returners back there fielding.

But this game has a mysterious aura surrounding it, bet at your own risk!

The Blindside Week One Player That Isn’t In Your Lineup

Veterans that play DFS have all been here. Everything will be going according to plan, you’re refreshing your potential earnings every 30 seconds, and then out of nowhere you’re blindsided. Not at all did this player cross your mind while setting your lineup. The 3% that started him could only be Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown.

It’s week one, so there’s bound to be a few of these guys. The sole player I’ll be focusing on is Michael Crabtree 4,400 (DK) 8,700 (FDr). Get it out of your system, “Oakland is where careers go to die”, but the stars are aligning perfectly for him.

Health-wise he’s back. The foot/ankle/Achilles troubles seem to have subsided. He went from a guy that usually doesn’t go to training camp to a guy that’s the “star” of one. Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for you, the Raiders are big time underdogs in this contest, so it will likely mean garbage time points and a heavy passing attack.

The Bengal’s secondary is mediocre. Adam Jones is their best corner. Then you have Leon Hall, who’s been plagued with injuries that mans the slot. On the opposite side of Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick lives; finally starting after Terrance Newman left for the Vikings. The two men over the top at safety are Reggie Nelson and George Iloka. Iloka is by far the best cover guy they got in their secondary, but Crabtree’s strength lies in the short passing game.

Derek Carr might be known for having a cannon as an arm, but if Oakland fans have any negative thing to say about Carr, it’s that he doesn’t throw the deep ball enough. Cooper will test the top, while Crabtree feasts underneath. Blindside secured and run ins with 80’s icons averted!

Against The Competition: LineStar DK

“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.” – Muhammad Ali

Recently, I came across this app called, “LineStar DK” and basically it’s an app that uses algorithms to spit out weekly predictions. LineStar also has a FanDuel app, but for this particular matchup we’re using the DraftKings’ version.

Let’s just get into it, here’s the lineup they predict will score the most points starting today on DraftKings:

Ben Roethlisberger 7,300 (DK) vs Patriots
Chris Ivory 4,100 (DK) vs Browns
DeMarco Murray 6,700 (DK) vs Falcons
Mohamed Sanu 3,300 (DK) vs Raiders
Antonio Brown 8,900 (DK) vs Patriots
Odell Beckham Jr 9,200 (DK) vs Cowboys
Larry Donnell 3,200 (DK) vs Cowboys
Martellus Bennett 4,300 (DK) vs Packers
Packers 3,000 (DK) vs Bears

A martyr’s lineup. Basically sacrificing a few lamb for the greater good of the village. Both of us are taking Antonio Brown, Martellus Bennett, and DeMarco Murray into our matchup. Really confused over why the Packers would the starting defense against the Bears. Sure, the Bears offensive line has been woeful for years, but the offense can still score points. The Optimus used for tomorrow’s games ought to consist of these players:

Sam Bradford 6,900 (DK) vs Falcons
DeMarco Murray 6,700 (DK) vs Falcons
Doug Martin 4,500 (DK) vs Titans
Antonio Brown 8,900 (DK) vs Patriots
Davante Adams 4,400 (DK) vs Bears
Stevie Johnson 3,700 (DK) vs Lions
Rob Gronkowski 7,000 (DK) vs Steelers
Martellus Bennett 4,300 (DK) vs Packers
Seattle 3,400 (DK) vs Rams

Chip Kelly’s offense always dazzles us the first week or so, hence Bradford being QB and Murray. Though, Murray would be in there regardless because it’s a great matchup for him and he’s one of the better backs in the league right now.—Doug Martin squares off against an awful defense. He’s looked himself of late which is a plus.—Davante Adams, Martellus Bennett, and Stevie Johnson are all dirt cheap and benefit from injuries, especially Stevie with Ladarius Green’s status in question.—Talk about Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Brown can be found here.—This week Seattle might not be playing at home, but the Rams are down to Benny Cunningham as starter as Tre Mason’s status looks iffy. The Ram’s pass-O doesn’t really threaten the Seattle secondary. Last but not least they have a dynamic returner in Tyler Lockett.

Checking Every Rice Bowl In Indo-China: Steelers at Patriots

Here you are projecting importance onto your Tuesday morning routine when football is nearly here. It’s cringe-worthy, seriously. The DOW is plummeting, Donald Trump is a legitimate presidential candidate, Kanye West is promising Yeezys in 2020 if he’s president, basically everything is falling apart. These are the ides of draft season.

We’re creeping in on Thursday Night Football. The “Golden Boy”, Tom Brady, wins yet another battle, so he’ll be under center. Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount are out indefinitely with suspensions and hopefully won’t be cruising around anywhere anytime soon. A guy named, Marvatis Bryant is also out. In today’s injury report the Steelers turned in a clean report as far as notables go, while the Patriots had starter Bryan Stork (Center) held out due to a concussion. Another notable on the report was Travaris Cadet, who fully participated, only making the Patriots RB situation even more murky for week one.

Thursday in Foxborourgh, MA, we should see rain and double digit wind. The forecasters seem pretty set that it will be raining on TNF, so the mystery will be if the wind will pick up going into the game—as of now 10-15 mph isn’t too problematic.

Since rain assumes run it’s appropriate to start out with the running game for each team. The Steelers project as a great run defense this year and with Belicheck’s historical disloyalty towards RBs, we can safely ignore any of the Patriots’ options. After losing Vince Wilfork and hearing about the rookie Malcom Brown having troubles on the defensive line, signs point towards the Steelers being able to get an effective run game started. DeAngelo Williams is 5,100 on DK (Draftkings) 9,900 on FDr (FantasyDraft), a bargain on both sites.

Both sites allow you to select eight players one defense. Draftking’s budget is 50,000 while FantasyDraft’s budget is double that. DK offers 3 WRs and 1 Flex. FDr offers 2 WRs and 2 Flexes.

The quarterback values go as follows: Big Ben 7,300 (DK) 14,900 (FDr) Tom Brady 7,700 (DK) 14,300 (FDr). They’re both great options, especially Brady on FDr. Take Brady over Roethlisberger this week because Pittsburgh will stifle the run game and force Brady to throw the ball, plus there’s the sense they’re looking to get back at Roger Goodell. Rob Gronkowski 7,000 (DK) 11,100 (FDr!!) and Scott Chandler 2,900 (DK) 6,200 (FDr) are going to eat up that Steeler defense. They were 21st fantasy-wise in stopping TEs in a division going up against the likes of Jordan Cameron, Dennis Pitta, and Jermaine Greshman twice a year.   On the other side, Heath Miller 3,300 (DK) 6,800 (FDr), who happens to be facing a defense that performed worse than the Steelers at stopping TEs last year. Without Bryant and one of the better RB receiving threats in the league, Miller should presumably get more targets than he normally would.

Now, the guy to likely have the most targets in the game is Antonio Brown 8,900 (DK) 17,900 (FDr). The Patriots don’t have Revis anymore so throw out the stats from last year. In comes Malcolm Butler, Super Bowl 49 hero. All reports coming out of camp are positive about him. There’s nothing on if he’s shadowing #1 wide receivers a la Revis and Antonio Brown lines up everywhere. He’s the only worry in a generous Patriot secondary. When a player’s cost is as high as Brown’s, there’s the expectation he will score at least 25 or else money was seemingly wasted. It’s hard enough to keep in and out of breaks with Brown on a dry day, now imagine in the rain. He’s definitely playable, but he wouldn’t make it into The Optimus (Lineup of the week).

Brown isn’t the only receiver for the Steelers, but Markus Wheaton 3,800 (DK) 7,700 (FDr) is consistently disappointing. Much rather find a WR bargain elsewhere, than put him in a lineup.

For the Patriots when you look beyond Julian Edelman 6,600 (DK) 13,200 (FDr)— who may not even play Thursday due to an ankle injury—there’s no one that you could play with confidence.

Both defenses should score in the low single digits. Pass on both.

…and that wraps up Thursday Night Football, finally.
